Sabores 五味

Aunque me falte de azúcar, y me ha venido mucho picante...If one hasn't got sugar in hand yet insists to make desserts, he'd be banging his heads against the wall. He could've made a trillion of other great dishes with other ingredients.

Some reflections

#1. Life's been very kind to me - luck has allowed me to indulge in 'the road less travelled' in South America, away from home and familiarity, where my curiosity gets well fed yet at the same time, where the darker and stupid side of me met heart-wrenching solitude, dangerous moments of self-doubt and perhaps a bit of self-loathing. But I believe that every good and bad essentially makes life an enthusiastic one and I'll rather stay stubborn about the idea that all efforts will eventually pay off - it's clear to me that there's a small part of me doesn't like things that come too easily. Having the privilege to live in the East and West, I've come to realise that we human beings living or making a living in the modern society of market, have a lot more in common than what differentiate us. From the “first world” to the “third world”, if they ever exist at all, there's the "rich" who make a fuss out of anything just to make their lives appear less dull, get confused about the ideas of price and value, money and wealth, and those who stay complacent by almost conscious choice; whereas the unlucky ones who get obsessed with their ideological enemies, left discouraged to take better responsibility and individual initiative. That being said, if one is willing to see, off the mainstream spotlight, there're those, regardless of their social status, who are generous with their “ownerships", share and dedicate themselves, without making a noise, in order for other members of the community to grow or to suffer less. The struggle to lead a meaningful and successful life might be intimidating and very likely puts one in a sulk (otherwise those well-educated and blue bloods engaging themselves passionately in blaming and judging must have been extremely happy). But there's a fine line between satire and cynicism. I feel like that there's enough of the latter and I don't want to contribute to that. Alongside the club of snobs there's a brighter side of the humanity. And I'd rather be less judgemental and complain less and give room for backing up the brave action-takers and change-makers, while trying to be more sympathetic to the rest - after all we all have one of those moments being in need of love and attention and some need them more desperately! Many hugs!!!

They say writing helps clarifying thoughts and beliefs, so I did.

For years I've been obsessed with the notion "development", which is the paramount goal that governments from all parts of the world strive for. I've been having a love and hate relationship with this lovely term. A lot of people, including government officials, social entrepreneurs, economists, seem to know what it means. However, what my everyday life, the people around me, even the society to which I belong to, does not happen to prove it. Constant questioning, doubt, uncertainties at the personal level have left my head and consciousness exhausted. Some friends are whining persistantly about how tiring and meaningless their work is, how overbearing their colleagues are, whereas others are consuming an unnecessary amount to get emotional satisfactions and a sense of honour. In my hometown, the stinky extreme capitalists and the "loyal" and highly educated civil servants have unfortunately lost their mind.

Eason Chan - Falling Flower and Running Stream

Cantonese to English Lyrics Translate

Eric Kwok/Jerald

River runs not carrying a grain of sand

his previous life was decaded in the upstream

one day when he passed by the dam

where the dusk sparkles, he came across a fallen flower

Once upon a time and happily ever after

don't imagine life too much of a fairy tale

even the story lasts shorter than the sunset in May, there's no need to be shocked

"Are you 'Han'?"

"So are you 'Han'?" My Colombian classmate was very curious. I hadn't given much thought to it until I came across this question right in the face.

Han dynesty (206 BC–220 AD), was when old "Chinese" (as known in the Western world) or, more precisely, Han characters (also known as Kanji in Japan & Kanja in Korea as "sister systems") were standardized. The first dictionary of Han characters《說文解字》published in 120 AD, explaining the six principles of Han character formation (六書), is still being taught at schools in Hong Kong.

The 28th Year

"Two years are going to pass by in the blink of an eye." a friend said to me in a park in Tribunales.

And here I am, 1/4 away from the end of my course, feeling like I haven't done enough already.

Life is too short to live other's dream and spend time on people who do not need my attention. Watching someone's success does not keep me out of the cruel rat race.

argentina-vigilance-freedom
View from the balcony

Today | Cantonese Lyrics English Translation

Eason Chan - Today

Raymond Lam
Jim Lau

Every thing today turns out badly, one trouble after another

all efforts go in vain

If you are fed up right now, crying hopelessly, allow me to give you warmth

for which at the end of everything it'll still feel like the blossom of first love.

The passion of yesterday is still sparkling

Nothing matters as long as there's hope between you and me

We coexist overcoming all ups and downs, laughters and tears

having gone through thick and thin is the real destiny.

Eason Chan 浮誇 Exaggeration | Cantonese Lyrics English Translation

Eason Chan - Exaggeration

Wyman Wong
Composer:C Y Kong

I'd say if somebody asks, but nobody came.

From high hope to frastration. I've got things to tell but nobody bothers.

I feel like the lid of a bottle waiting to get opened, but my lips are left with moss

In the middle of the crowd, silence is never heard, only big drama gets the spotlight.

Sing out loud out of the blue, every place can be a open stage

Wear the most stunning glitters, pretend to think deep.

Make sure to pose with hands in jacket when the paparazzi comes

uyuni-arbol-de-piedra
Árbol de Piedra, Bolivia

Hong Kong's got World's Attention. What's Next?!!

Hong Kong's Occupy Central protest or the Umbrella Revolution has made its appearance on the international media, including here in Latin America. But this is not a war. This is a long journey of revolution which requires long-term strategy. Universal Suffrage is not going to solve the social problem and discontent. Learn from the mistakes and tragedies of Venezuela and many latin american countries. Hong Kong has yet created a strong political leader. Attention-seeking is not a what a smart free-rider would do.

International coverage on Hong Kong's Protest (Spanish).

Hong Kong Protest Alternative Views

Since there's no Hongkongers in nor do I think anyone would be interested in a small place like Hong Kong over here in this continent, I feel an urge to express my alternative views towards this Occupy Central, or Umbrella Revolution in Hong Kong that has been going on since September 22, 2014.

"When dictatorship becomes a fact, revolution becomes a duty." Yet, after making a mere appearance on the international media, some innovation is necessary to take the revolution to the next level. Politics aside, China has massive capital and linkages across the pillar economic sectors of Hong Kong. CY Leung is nothing more than Beijing's puppet, Li Ka-shing and his fellow tycoons are the real big players. The city of Hong Kong is waiting for new real leaders like Jack Ma. And shall we not forget about the forgotten, that 1/5 of us, 1.3 Million of Hongkongers are still living in dire poverty and cage homes under the Chinese regime. What are we actually fighting for? Power or equality?

Our enemy is the 'inexplicable fear' inside us towards the super power. Democracy is not the panecea of social-economic problems, just look at Venezuela and Argentina. How many of us Hongkoners are actually working something substantial on maximizing our opportunities and lowering the risk for the pursuit of a better quality of life and social and economic sustainability in the place we call home?

More scattered demostrations are taking the Hong Kong nowhere whilst all potential leaders of the town are hiding in their own comfort zone. Occupy Central, or the Umberella Revolution, like any other protests, will lose international attention in no time. The journey of revolution has just started and it will be a long way to go. Get busy, please, my fellow Hongkoners. And please, we don't need to spread more hatred.

When I Grow Old I Want To Be Like Chico Buarque

When I grow old, I want to be like Chico Buarque. I want to look myself in the mirror and see a pair of eyes like those of Chico Buarque, with a warm light that shines behind them. Having been existed in the earth for 70 years, those pair of sparkling sapphires are those in which passion prevails and emotion still lusters, profound like the sea of wisdom.

Chico buarque eyes

Life is yet to be completed

I have made a good fight,
I have come to the end of my journey,
I have kept the faith.

II Timothy 4:7
